What Is A Sump Pump – And Does Your Home Need One?

02.02.2026 by Icar // Leave a Comment

Dealing with a flooded basement can be a recurring nightmare for many homeowners. However, there is a simple solution to this problem – and that is a sump pump. Some flood-prone homes may already have one of these installed. If yours doesn’t, here is some more information about why you might want to invest in a pump.

What is a sump pump?

A sump pump is a specialized pump installed in the lowest part of a home – typically a basement or a crawl space. It’s used to remove excess water, helping to prevent issues like mold growth and structural damage.

This pump sits in a small hole in the floor called a ‘sump pit’, which collects groundwater and runoff. When water levels rise, the pump activates automatically, channelling the water away from your foundation through pipes to a safe drainage area such as a storm drain or dry well.

There are two main types of sump pump to choose from, each suited to different needs:

  • A submersible sump pump: This is designed to be fully immersed within the sump pit, making it quieter and more efficient at handling large volumes of water. It’s ideal for homes that are at frequent risk of flooding.
  • A pedestal sump pump: This pump features a motor mounted above the pit on a tall stand, keeping it out of the water. Pedestal sump pumps can often be easier to maintain, but are noisier.

Choosing the right type of sump pump depends on your space and the type of water volume you experience. Professionals like Metro Mechanical plumbing services can help you pick the right style of pump and handle installation for you.

Do I need a sump pump?

To determine whether you need to install a sump pump, look for signs of water intrusion such as damp walls, musty odors and pooling water after storms. Homes in areas with a high water table – where groundwater sits close to the surface – are particularly vulnerable, as natural seepage can lead to regular basement flooding.

If you live near a river or in an area that gets a heavy amount of rainfall, one of these devices could be essential for protecting your property from severe damage. You should definitely consider a sump pump if your home has already flooded in the past and resulted in expensive repairs.

Sump pump installation costs can vary. In many cases, getting one installed can save you a lot of money in the future. It’s recommended that you get your sump pump serviced annually and that you consider a battery backup to keep your pump working during a power outage.

A summary of sump pumps

Sump pumps are excellent for combatting flooding and preventing water damage to your property. To determine whether you truly need one, hire an expert to assess your needs. They can also help you to choose the right type of sump pump and make sure it is installed properly. Regular maintenance will ensure that your sump pump stays in good working order.
