International Women's Day

It seems that it was just yesterday when I wrote a post about International Women's Day for 2012 and for today the first thing I checked is what Google Doodles has especially just for today and this is what it has :

Millions of women around the world are celebrating this special day to commemorate women in all facets of life. International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, when women's oppression and inequality was spurring. It is also a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that caused great unrest and critical debate and gave rise to radical ideologies. 

Women then, has became more vocal and active in campaigning for change. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. 

Since its birth in the socialist movement, International Women's Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and a greater shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation, great improvements have been made. We now have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices.

And so the tone and nature of International Women's Day has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more.

I remember celebrating women's day when I was in college watching documentaries and attending symposium that feature special women and their triumphs. That made me realize that it has really gone a long long way from the freedom that was just a dream before to now when every dream a girl makes can be made into reality. Having said that, I would like like to take a moment to salute the women who have fought a great fight just to give us the liberty that we have now. 

This is always a call for challenge for all of us whether it be women's day or not, to make a difference, think globally and act locally and make International Women's Day not just for one day but everyday. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.
