I've had several attempts to be a mom-preneur. In the past I have sold clothes and many other items both online and offline. In 2009 I started making accessories made of beads which I was able to sell to friends and family, even did a custom order for a cousin who made it as giveaway to her staff. More than the monetary part of selling these items comes the satisfaction that is it giving me, of making something out of my hobby.
Being part of the Global Team of 200, I recently discovered an amazingly impressive organization of women, actually a non-profit company based in Uganda which is called 1000 Shillings. The name came from the currency in Uganda~shillings; and this is the amount of money an average woman in Namatala slum lives on per day which is approximately $0.40. Imagine!
1000 Shillings started in the Namatala slum of Mbale, Uganda. The company sells paper bead jewelry, made by six powerful and creative women. These women artisans earn capital for their own small businesses by making limited-edition products.
Each product sold on 1000 Shillings is unique to the website and sold as a limited edition piece. When you buy from 1000 Shillings your money is going to help the women we work with start their own small businesses with the ultimate goal of empowering them to stand alone as small business owners.
Each product sold through 1000 Shillings helps a woman establish a small business, which enables her to support her family. This also aims to tell the in-depth story behind each artisan that is for the world to know and be inspired to empower women more.
The goal of 1000 Shillings is that you get to know the woman you are buying from, and then, through purchasing her products, you help her to become a self-sufficient businesswoman that is able to support her family.
