Build Your Own Garage Gym – It’s Easier Than You Think

05.19.2025 by Icar // Leave a Comment

Life is just a little expensive right now. From increases to your bills to more expensive groceries, it can feel like your expenses are getting bigger, but your income is staying the same. Finding ways to make some cuts to your spending can help your paycheck stretch a little further each month, but that can mean giving up ‘luxuries’ like your gym membership. But giving up the gym doesn’t have to mean giving up your routine or quitting exercise, there’s another solution that could make working out cheaper and a little more convenient – a home gym!

Find out how to build your own garage gym, and enjoy the flexibility of working out at home.

Prepare your space

The first thing you’ll need to do is make your garage a safe and motivating space for working out. You can start with painting the walls and adding garage floor coating to help you get your gym basics ready. Make sure you’ve got plenty of light, and consider adding some mirrors to help you check your form as you work out.

A good garage clear-out can help ensure your garage becomes a dedicated workout space. Find alternative storage for your household items, or create a partition to help you enjoy the best of both worlds.

Kit it out on a budget

The next thing you’re going to need is equipment. While you may not have the budget for a full suite of machines and weight stations, you can start with some of the basics. Mats and hand weights are a great place to start, allowing you to do effective bodyweight workouts without the need for expensive equipment. You can invest in the things you really like to use like a treadmill or a weights bench, or take a look at Facebook Marketplace, eBay and other online marketplaces to help you get a good deal on some useful equipment.

Add to it over time

As you get more use out of your home gym, you can start adding more equipment. Starting off slowly helps you figure out what exercises you like doing at home, and what you need to push yourself further. It’s good to get into a routine to ensure you actually use your gym, instead of it becoming a space that gathers dust! Encourage the whole family to use it so you can all stay fit and healthy, without the need to leave the house!

A home gym is an excellent way to make the most of your home. Using your garage is the ideal solution to help you work out in a spacious environment, without disturbing the rest of the family. With a little work to get your space ready, you can fill it with the equipment you need to maintain your fitness routine and enjoy exercising at home. From an at-home yoga studio to your personal spin class, there are tons of possibilities out there. Get to work on your garage gym and start working out from home.
