When it’s time, you’ll know it’s time. Unfortunately, when it is time your bank manager doesn’t always agree with you, and it’s in that time that you’ll appreciate this very nifty how-to guide we’ve created.
Because we know more than anyone, how refreshing and psychologically beneficial it can be to get that change in when you know you need it, we’ve found a few inventive ways that you can redecorate, right now, without spending a dime.
Whether it’s because you’re thinking of selling your home, or it’s just because you need that change that you’ve been putting off forever, here is all you’ll need to breath that cool, fresh and new air into your home, without having to sell it first.
“Our need, will be the real creator” – Plato
Now, that line is better known to you and me as; necessity is the mother of all invention. So when it’s time to dust off the old and invite the new but that credit card limit is looking dangerously close to it’s limit, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to bring about some gorgeous changes around your home, with just a little imagination – and some elbow grease.
FIRST, PLAN IT!
You’ll be impressed by how far you can get using some of that old corporate wisdom when it comes to planning projects around the house. Before you take on anything, no matter how small it might seem in the thought process, can be achieved so much easier and with way more efficiency if you’ve taken the time to write a decent plan first.
We like the P O L C method. This stands for:
P-Planning
O-Organizing
L-Leading, and
C-Completing
So when you’re taking on a redecorating challenge here’s how that goes.
First, figure out your vision for the rooms you want changed. Is it the whole house? Just the outside entertaining areas? All the living rooms and lounges? The kitchen? We should add that at this point there is the unwritten rule of the magic “R” letter that doesn’t show up in the POLC acronym – and it stands for realistic.
It might seem disheartening not being able to afford designer pieces or expensive fabrics or linens but that shouldn’t stop you from finding your “perfect” image – then figuring out the affordable version of that.
There are simply too many of our dreams that fall away because they’re not realistic and the real news is that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on redecorating.
So your plan already involves how you want your rooms to look, good place to start and now, crucially you also know what your financial commitment is going to be. Now we get to move into organizing all of it.
Based on your financial plan and how you mean to organize your project based on that, you can either budget for monthly changes that culminate in the big reveal, or you can cost the entire project, save for it over a few months and then do it all as quickly as possible.
By the way, both of those ideas will work great for your delayed-gratification reward system – mental health bonus!
ORGANIZE & LEAD
We’ve included the very business sounding “lead” into our redecorating plans for you, because every good project deserves a good project manager and this extends to if you’re able to employ contractors at varying points of your redecorating mission.
Somebody has to be in charge and when you’re redecorating, it’s a great idea to involve your children besides so if you like, you can “delegate” some of the smaller tasks about their own rooms to them, this will give you a great excuse to teach them some responsibility as well.
COMPLETE IT!
This is our favorite part, but (yep), it isn’t without it’s own very specific set of circumstances either. While you’re out and about shopping and getting estimates for your redecorating, you could also use that time to start planning for any structural installations, repairs or replacements your home may be in need of. You might need windows replacing (check out Renewal by Andersen Window Installer) for some inspiration, or it might be time to have the paving redone.
Whatever it is, it’s a good idea to start planning your next project and if you managed to pull this one off successfully, you’ll know how much fun it can all be as well.
