Planning a More Ethical Wedding

02.20.2026 by Icar //

Weddings are joyful celebrations of two people and two families coming together and affirming their love and commitment. They are also major events that can have a significant social and environmental impact. So, if you are someone who is concerned about the ethics of your big day, from sourcing the right materials to choosing the best vendors, so that your wedding day can really reflect your values, you are going to want to read on and find out what you can do to plan a more ethical wedding.

Start with ethical jewelry choices

We all know that the materials used to make jewelry can be pretty unethical, so this is a good place to start if you want your wedding to have good values. Luckily today, there is no shortage of ethical options available if you are willing to look for them.

Choosing an oval half moon lab grown engagement ring, for example, combines timeless elegance with a more sustainable approach. Lab grown diamonds are created using advanced technology rather than mined from the earth, which can reduce environmental disruption and concerns about supply chain transparency.

You can also look for jewelers who prioritize recycled metals, fair labor practices, and transparent sourcing. Taking the time to research your options ensures your symbol of commitment aligns with your ethical priorities.

Rethink your venue

Your wedding venue can have a major environmental footprint so it is worth giving it a bit more consideration. Outdoor venues like botanical gardens and community spaces are often a better choice because, not only do they look beautiful but they tend to require fewer resources than large, energy intensive banquet halls.

If you do want to be married indoors, then you should look for venues that specialize in sustainable practices such as using renewable energy and operating composition programs, amongst other things.

Choose mindful fashion

Wedding attire can also be part of your ethical plan. Consider designers who use sustainable fabrics such as organic cotton, silk, or recycled materials. Renting a gown or suit is another environmentally friendly option, as it extends the life cycle of each piece.

You might also want to think about vintage fashion instead of buying new. Wearing a pre-loved gown or heirloom piece adds sentimental value while reducing demand for new production. Bridesmaids and groomsmen can be encouraged to choose outfits they will wear again rather than one time use styles.

Work with local and ethical vendors

Supporting local businesses is a great choice for an ethical wedding because it means less transportation emissions, and it also pours more of your money back into your own community.

It’s good to look for caterers who use seasonal and locally grown ingredients, and florists who use local flowers, too. Doing this is ot only more sustainable, but it will definitely give your wedding a more unique flavor too.

As you can see, it’s totally possible toplan a more ethical wedding, and you can do so without losing any of the magic and meaning of your average wedding, so really, why wouldn’t you?
