When you live in a dark home, you can get used to the lack of light without even realizing it. But when you next go round a friend’s house and see the amount of natural light that pings around the space, it’s a bit like those beams have also slapped you in the face!
Your home doesn’t get anywhere near the same amount of illumination, and when you head home and step through the front door, it feels like you’re living in a dark and dingy basement.
But you can make a change here! You can brighten things up, at least a little bit. And if you want some ideas about how to bring more light into your home, here are a few things to try out.

Choose a Paint That Reflects Light
Some paints will, some paints might reflect some, some paints won’t at all. And it’s not just about the actual color and shade of the paint in question either. You need to know if it has any light reflection properties to it.
Sometimes known as a paint’s LRV, most paint mixtures will be formulated to reflect both natural and artificial lighting. This helps the light to ‘bounce’ around the room and keep your space feeling lit up in the way you need.
So, if your space feels dark no matter what you do, you may need to put on a new coat of paint that’ll help the light you do have go a bit further!
Replace Your Windows
If you’re dealing with small and pathetic windows in your bedroom or living room – the kind that are boxy or have little width to them – the best move here is to replace them. Get those windows taken out, get the wall trimmed out, and get some bigger and better windows installed.
Indeed, window installation will let the most amount of natural light into your home, no matter which direction your house faces. And this way, you can be sure that any sunlight that shines throughout the day is getting into your rooms, which you can then put to good use with a bit of clever internal decor.
Go For Wider Lighting
This is another great way to make light go further in your home. Opt for bulbs that have a wider resonance area, or more simply, that cast out light further than just a couple feet around them.
You want lighting that illuminates a whole room, and even if you need to add in 4 or more new wall lamps, or you need to put a standing lamp in the corner in every single room in your home, so be it! You need the light, and the way your home is currently set up simply won’t do you any favors when it comes to eye strain!
If your home always feels on the dark side, you can brighten it up. It might take a bit of careful manoeuvring to make it happen, but it’ll work!
