VeggieTales: Celery Night Fever DVD Review & Giveaway

08.08.2014 by Icar //

"If you like to talk to tomatoes, If a squash can make you smile…" these are the introduction of a familiar song and believe me, when my daughter hears it, she automatically screams and gets really excited. Veggie Tales!!!

Today, providing enertainment for kids can be quite a challenge. But the good news is, according to a 2014 survey by Barna Research Group, VeggieTales is the single most trusted and most popular brand among practicing Christian moms. The study also found that 91 percent of those moms rated the series from 8 to 10 on “family-friendliness,” outscoring other well-known, popular kids’ entertainment properties by double digits.

I was introduced to our first Veggie Tales when a sister in church gave 2 DVD's for my daughter's birthday. And from then on, we can't stop! I was given the chance to get a copy of the latest DVD "Celery Night Fever" and as always it was a hit not only to my daughter but to the whole family.

Celery Night Fever

VeggieTales has been a trusted parenting partner to moms of preschoolers – and the world’s number one purveyor of silly songs — for more than 20 years. It is truly a homegrown brand, created in 1993 by Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki, founders of Big Idea Productions, as a show to entertain their own children.

The Story

In Celery Night Fever, the retro funkadelic sights and sounds of polyester leisure suits and disco balls take center stage-along with a timeless message of friendship and forgiveness.

Bruce Onion, a nefarious real-estate developer who plans to turn the serene, green Celery Park into a parking lot.  His unsavory scheme spurs Laura Carrot and Junior Asparagus to enact a bold plan: reuniting the long-lost ’70s band The Groovy Brothers to play at a fund-raising concert. The problem is, The Groovy Brothers haven’t spoken to each other in decades, and the members have little interest in getting back together.

Their long-simmering feud spills over to affect Laura and Junior.  It’s not just Celery Park that’s in jeopardy – if best friends can’t learn to forgive each other and accept each other’s faults, the veggies might lose their cherished community gathering spot.

The Verdict

First of all, I like the upbeat and disco fever theme of the songs used. I found myself swaying to the music while watching. In addition, I love the funny and hilarious punchlines which is a VeggieTales trademark.

Just like all the VeggieTales stories that we have watched, this one is full of lessons and inspiration. Each of the characters represent a trait in which we can all relate to. Celery Night Fever's main storyline is about the valuable lesson of forgiveness. For kids, forgiveness may simply be exemplified by gesture of saying "Sorry" to playmates, siblings and parents when an unpleasant circumstance happened.

The truth of Ephesians 4:12, the Bible verse Bob and Larry share at the end of the fresh and fun new DVD:

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

At a young age, it should be instilled in our children's minds the value of forgiveness, and how it can make a big difference in relationships in and outside the home.

For us adults, forgiveness is a more serious matter, more difficult to deal with. It is a challenge for us to become like kids in the area of forgiveness-to be more considerate to others, unassuming in some ways.

The Bible has a lot to say about forgiveness – one of the ultimate expressions is God forgiving our sins. Many other verses address the importance of us forgiving each other-the benefits doing so brings and/or restores relationships.

Everything really is better when realize we’ll all in this big salad of life together! Here are some inspiring thoughts to keep our feet on the ground:

•    Love and forgives go hand-in-hand – even for animated vegetables!

•    Forgiveness is not a one-time event – we always have to engage in forgiving.

•    Forgiveness helps to keep others from being mashed like a potato

•    Forgiving others is the organic way to keep us from judging them

•    Yes, we’re even supposed to forgive our enemies

Fun fact: If you watched the commentary on Snoodle's Tale during the Dr. Jiggle and Mr. Sly, Mike mentioned that they wanted to use a famous disco beat, but weren't sure they could get the rights.  They found out later the disco person was a VeggieTales fan and would've let them use it.  They mentioned they might have to make another disco episode to use it.
