March 8th of every year, International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. The history of International Women’s Day dates back at the turn of the twentieth century that first started in North America and across Europe as caused by the protests and activism of women against discrimination and the quest to fight for equal rights (with men). It marks the story of ordinary women as makers of history that goes back to the old struggle of women to be in equal footing with men and to be able to participate in society.
International Women’s Days is a special day when women are recognized for their achievements without any prejudice or boundaries that pertains to nationality, ethnicity, language, culture, economy or politics. This special occasion is marked by all women’s group around the world, and for some it is a national holiday. This is actually a good occasion to commemorate struggles and accomplishments made by women in the past that lead to where women are in society now. As we celebrate it each year, it is an equally good opportunity to look ahead for brighter possibilities and increased potentials that are in store for the woman of today.
Since 1909, when the first protest was held, a tremendous leap has happened to women and her status everywhere-in society and at work. We are no longer seen as the weaker sex, I guess all the hard work that the women activists exerted are all worth it. So let us now celebrate womanhood, celebrate our rights..Happy International Women’s Day to all of you!
